Carrier Oils (also known as base oils or fixed oils)

Essential oils are basically the essence of a plant. The value of natural plant oils have been recognized for more than 6000 years and can be attested to by the Holy Bible.  Natural therapeutic oils are different from the “perfume quality” oils in that they are 100% pure and natural. Because of this many of them must be diluted with carrier oils before they are applied to the skin (to reduce the likelihood of irritation). Furthermore, the dilution process helps the oils to be spread over the surface of the skin.

What oils are considered carrier oils?

  • Almond oil
  • Olive oil
  • Aloe oil
  • Pumkin seed oil
  • Safflower oil
  • Sunflower oil
  • Wheatgerm oil
  • Walnut oil
  • Sesame oil
  • Rosehip oil
  • Macadamia oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Hazelnut oil
  • Grape seed oil
  • Evening primrose oil
  • Calendula oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Apricot kernel oil

These oils are a few of the carrier oils that can be used for dilution of essence oils. The choice of carrier oils to be used depend on the purpose. If you are giving a relaxing massage you may want to use a lighter oil which would allow the oil to  “slide”  easily on the body. If you are giving a deep massage you would want to use heavier oils which will give more “traction” on the skin.

When choosing oils you want to use oils that will not form a barrier thus preventing the essential oils from being absorbed or penetrating the skin (which happens when you use baby oil).

Essential oils can be used for many reasons baths, personal care, cleaning, diffusing, compress, massages, aromatherapy, muscle aches, sinus problems, nausea, sunburn, cuts, congestion, bruises, fatigue, indigestion, headaches, cramps, diabetes, weight loss, and a host of other things. But in order to get the maximum benefit the right essential oils need to be used in the right dosage and with the most the proper carrier oil.
